This profound confidence stems from a powerful set of features: a rich, algebraic type system, a revolutionary borrow checker, expressive macros, and a well-defined unsafe system for when you truly need to step outside the lines.
Overseeing this all is the “friendliest compiler” in the industry—a tool that feels less like a critic and more like a partner, guiding you toward correct, efficient, and safe code.
The core of this partnership is what can be described as Rust’s “golden contract” with its user: if you embrace the ownership model, with its two-pronged approach of shared (&) and exclusive (&mut) references, the compiler will, in turn, make your life easy. It will guarantee, at compile time, that your code is free from entire classes of bugs, most notably data races.
But this golden contract, which makes writing concurrent and parallel code “fearless,” begins to show cracks when one enters the world of async Rust. To many, async code feels alien, almost like a different language embedded within Rust. The problem isn’t that async is broken or unusable—it is, in its own right, a technical marvel. The problem is that it threatens the very foundation of what makes Rust feel like Rust.
The Golden Contract of Ownership
To understand the problem, one must first appreciate the contract. The typical journey of learning Rust often follows a specific path:
Stage 1: Ownership. You learn to move values. You share nothing. You pass data by value, and the compiler strictly enforces that only one variable “owns” that data at a time.

Concurrency is what a single human does when “multitasking.” We are single-tasking creatures. We do one piece of mental work at a time. Concurrency is how we manage multiple tasks: we work on one until we get blocked (e.g., waiting for a network response), and then we switch to another. A single-threaded CPU does the same, switching between tasks so rapidly it creates the illusion of simultaneous progress. This is ideal for I/O-bound work, where most of the time is spent waiting.
Parallelism is simple to explain: a group of three people each takes one task and they work on them simultaneously. This is what modern multi-core computers can do. The problem, both in group work and in computing, is that one task may never finish.
This distinction is the crux of the problem. Rust’s compiler doesn’t just want to know what your data is (via its type); it must also know when your data is valid (via its lifetime). A task that might run forever, or for an unknowable amount of time, is a direct threat to this requirement.

The compiler will stop us with a detailed error. The gist is that the reference &url does not live long enough. The tokio::spawn function requires that any data moved into the new async task must have a ‘static lifetime.
Why? Because tokio‘s default multi-threaded executor is parallel. The new task we’ve spawned could be picked up by any thread, and the compiler has no guarantee when it will finish. It’s entirely possible for our main function to exit, destroying url, while the spawned task is still running (or waiting to run). To be safe, the compiler demands that all references passed to spawn be valid for the entire execution of the program (‘static).
The “fix” is to obey. You might change the url to be a &’static str, or Arc<String>. But let’s follow the reference-based path. If we make url a ‘static string literal, the compiler is happy.
And this is the moment of fury. Of course you can have fearless concurrency if you only pass around read-only, globally-scoped data! That’s not impressive. This “fix” effectively disables the borrow checker, the very feature we came to Rust for.
We’ve been forced to trade local reasoning for global reasoning. The ‘static requirement “infects” our code. The do_expensive_work function might now demand a &’static str. The function that calls that function must now also provide ‘static data. This requirement propagates up the call stack, forcing us to make broad, program-wide guesses about our application’s runtime state, all to solve what should have been a local problem. This is exactly the “build a complex runtime in your head” cognitive overhead that Rust was supposed to save us from.
Restoring the Contract: The Power of Scoping
This story has a happy ending, and the solution is brilliantly simple. The problem isn’t Rust, and it isn’t even async. The problem is the unknowable lifetime of the spawned task. If we can guarantee to the compiler when the task will finish, the borrow checker can get back to work.
The solution is scoping.
Consider, for a moment, native OS threads. Rust’s standard library provides std::thread::scope. This function is genius. It works like this:

A Practical Guide to Reclaiming Idiomatic Rust
If you find yourself fighting the ‘static lifetime and feeling like you’re not writing Rust anymore, you have options. Here are several, in ascending order of preference, for how to write modern, safe, and efficient concurrent code.
4. The “Concession”: Arc
You can, of course, wrap your data in an Arc (Atomically Reference Counted pointer). This moves the borrow checking from compile-time to runtime. Arc is a valid and necessary tool for certain problems of shared ownership. But when used just to appease tokio::spawn, it feels like a concession—a failure to leverage Rust’s zero-cost, compile-time guarantees.
3. The “Modern tokio“ Solution: tokio::task::scope
The tokio maintainers are well-aware of this problem. Newer versions of the library are introducing scoping mechanisms. The (still-unstable) tokio::task::scope provides a way to spawn tasks that are guaranteed to complete before the scope exits, much like std::thread::scope. This allows you to spawn tasks that can borrow data from their local environment, effectively solving the ‘static problem within the tokio ecosystem.
2. The “Elegant Runtime”: smol
The smol crate is a brilliant alternative async runtime. It’s brilliant because it doesn’t commit the original sin of conflating concurrency with parallelism. Both are available, but you opt into what you want. As its name suggests, it’s also tiny—the entire executor is around a thousand lines of code. You can even use tokio-based libraries with smol by using the async-compat crate, which adapts futures and I/O types.
1. The “Magic Wand”: rayon
Here’s a critical question: do you really need async? If your goal is to speed up a CPU-intensive inner loop (parallelism) rather than wait for I/O (concurrency), async is the wrong tool.
For this, there is rayon. rayon is a data-parallelism library that is nothing short of magic. It magically converts any standard iterator into a parallel iterator, often with a single method call: .par_iter(). It provides data-race-free, work-stealing parallelism and has been a rockstar in the Rust world for a decade. If you just want to make a synchronous program faster, don’t infect it with async everywhere. Just use rayon.
Don’t Forget the OS Runtime
Finally, don’t forget the runtime that your operating system already gives you for free. Modern Linux kernels can manage tens of thousands of threads with ease. For many high-performance services, the complexity of an async runtime may be a premature optimization.
Using std::thread::scope with native threads might be all you need. This approach is simpler, easier to debug, and allows you to use the entire ecosystem of standard Unix thread management and debugging tools, rather than async-specific instrumentation like tracing.
In Rust, you don’t have to use async. And even if you do, you have more options than the tokio default. The core of the advice is this: if you scope the asynchronous or parallel part of your code tighter than the whole program, your life will be better.
You can keep writing Rust, with the compiler as your trusted guide, and regain the fearless confidence you were promised.
